Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?
The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable federal tax credit administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
It is intended to help offset some of the additional costs faced by individuals who have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functioning.
Is the DTC based on diagnosis?
No.
The DTC is not based on diagnosis alone. Eligibility is based on how a condition functionally limits daily activities, such as walking, thinking, communicating, or completing basic self-care tasks — even with treatment, devices, or supports.
What types of impairments may qualify?
CRA evaluates eligibility based on functional impact, not condition names. Categories include:
-
Vision
-
Hearing
-
Walking
-
Speaking
-
Feeding
-
Dressing
-
Eliminating (bowel or bladder function)
-
Mental functions necessary for everyday life
-
Life-sustaining therapy
-
Cumulative effect of significant limitations in more than one area
Examples of Conditions That May Qualify
Eligibility is based on functional impact (and that's our speciality; defining that functional limitation), not diagnosis alone. Examples of conditions that may qualify (depending on functional limitations) include, but are not limited to:
-
Neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, MS, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, dementia, Alzheimer’s)
-
Developmental or cognitive disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability)
-
Mental health conditions (e.g., severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia)
-
Chronic pain or fatigue conditions
-
Respiratory disease (e.g., severe COPD)
-
Mobility-limiting arthritis or musculoskeletal disease
-
Sensory impairments (vision or hearing loss)
-
Conditions requiring life-sustaining therapy
Do I need a family doctor or nurse practitioner for referral?
No.
You do not need a referral or a family doctor to access our services. While you may already have a primary care provider, our services are separate and are not provincially covered. Your doctor or nurse practitioner could also charge for these forms and assessments, but many clients choose Insight because we specialize in completing forms and documentation with the proper professional language, ensuring accuracy and compliance — a key reason clients trust us.
Who provides your assessments?
To assist you with forms, documentation, and assessments, our team may help retrieve or collect relevant health records on your behalf. Only designated staff — such as reception team members or licensed nurses (RPN/RN) — are involved in this process. All assessments, certifications, and professional documentation are completed exclusively by a licensed Nurse Practitioner, a regulated healthcare professional authorized to assess and certify disability-related impairments under CRA guidelines. This ensures your information is handled securely and professionally, while all official forms and letters meet legal and regulatory requirements.
Are your services virtual or in person?
Our services are virtual only.
If an in-person assessment were clinically required, this would be identified at the time of initial assessment, and you would be informed and referred appropriately.
Do you complete the DTC form?
Yes.
We complete and certify Part B of CRA Form T2201 – Disability Tax Credit Certificate, based on a comprehensive functional assessment and review of supporting documentation. We can also assist you with Part A of the form.
Do you guarantee approval?
No.
We do not guarantee approval, refunds, or financial outcomes.
CRA makes all final decisions.
What is an RDSP?

- Save for the future
- Receive government grants and bonds
- Grow savings tax-deferred
- Are opened and managed through financial institutions (banks, credit unions)
- Designed to help individuals save for the future
- Eligible for government grants and bonds, depending on income and contribution history
A RDSP can only be opened after the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is approved.

No, Insight Disability Solutions does not open, manage, or administer RDSps. They must be set up directly through a financial institution.
Our role is limited to:
Functional health assessment

Do you provide a receipt?
Yes.
We provide a receipt for all services rendered, which may be used for personal records or tax purposes where applicable.

Can children apply for the DTC?
Yes.
Children of any age may be eligible if they meet CRA’s functional criteria. A parent or legal guardian must be involved in the process.
Can seniors apply?
Yes.
Age alone does not qualify someone, but age-related impairments may qualify if they cause significant functional limitations.
Can I apply retroactively?
Yes.
If CRA determines you met eligibility criteria in previous years, the DTC may be applied retroactively (often up to 10 years, depending on circumstances).
How long does the process take?
-
Assessment & form completion: typically 1–2 weeks once all documentation is received
-
CRA review: varies and is outside our control (often weeks to months)
What happens if CRA denies my application?
You may:
-
Request a second review, or
-
File a formal objection, and
-
Submit additional supporting medical information
We can explain the clinical reasoning used but do not represent clients in disputes with CRA. We have a dispute fee that will be disclosed at time of request if needed depending on the amount of work needed to complete the new application.
What if I am not eligible?
If CRA criteria are not met, we will document findings honestly and ethically.
We do not certify applications that do not meet CRA standards.
Can I be reimbursed for a paid assessment or form?
Yes. In many cases, fees paid for forms, functional assessments, or professional documentation can qualify for tax credits or deductions, such as the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) or caregiver-related credits. Clients should keep their receipts and consult CRA guidelines or a tax professional when filing for reimbursement.
How do divorced or separated parents apply?
-
Typically, only one parent can claim a dependent per year for tax purposes.
-
Parents should agree on who will claim the dependent for each tax year.
-
If custody or care arrangements change, the claim may alternate annually or as specified in legal/court agreements.
-
Our service can provide the same functional assessment/documentation for whichever parent is claiming, ensuring the form is accurate and ready for submission.

Is this service available in Ontario and Nova Scotia?
Yes.
Our virtual services are available to eligible clients in Ontario and Nova Scotia, subject to regulatory scope.
Do I need to be working to qualify?
No.
Employment status does not determine eligibility. Functional impairment does.
Can a caregiver or family member be involved?
Yes.
Caregivers may provide important collateral information, especially for children, seniors, or individuals with cognitive impairment.
Can you help if the applicant is deceased?
In certain circumstances, yes — particularly for retroactive claims. Additional documentation is required.
